Deliveroo will now deliver essential items from 120 M&S franchise stores across key UK cities including Cambridge, Reading, Brighton, Nottingham, Manchester, Leeds and London within the next two weeks. Essential items like pasta, milk, bread, tinned goods, ready meals and household items will be available to purchase from M&S petrol service stores with no delivery charge. “At Deliveroo, we want to do everything possible to help people get the food they want and need during this worrying period,” Deliveroo’s founder and chief executive Will Shu said.
“We hope we can play a role in supporting people who have to isolate to get the food they need, whether that’s household items or restaurant food.”
The delivery giant, which is currently in the midst of a troubled tie-up with Amazon, is also launching a new range called “Essentials by Deliveroo”. This range will feature similar essential goods like pasta, rice, tinned goods and household products for families struggling to reach stores due to self-isolation.
Grocers across the UK have struggled to meet unprecedented demand for online food deliveries amid the coronavirus crisis, with Boris Johnson’s suggestion earlier this week that families use the service where they can leading many websites to crash due to spikes in traffic.
